INTRODUCTION:
This Service Information bulletin outlines an enhancement made to the 2.0L cylinder head casting part numbers provided below. Additional material has been added in the valve guide boss area above the intake port to provide additional support for the guide and eliminate cracking. In rare cases, (depending on the severity of the crack), some engine oil consumption may result from engine vacuum drawing oil through the crack and into the intake port.

The new cylinder heads were incorporated into production starting with the following VINs:

SERVICE PROCEDURE / INFORMATION:
When receiving a customer concern of smoke from the exhaust, one of the checks should be to look at the condition of the spark plugs. If inspection shows only one (or two on opposite banks) with evidence of burning oil while the other plugs appear normal as shown in the left photo below, there may be a crack in the valve guide boss area. In some cases, the crack may extend up into the valve spring seat area as shown in the photo on the right. Finding comparatively heavy oil deposits on the back of one cylinder’s intake valves while the others appear normal would be another indicator. If a crack is not readily visible, use the dye / penetrant / developer method to help locate and identify it.
