| SUBJECT: | Transmission Cooler Flushing |
INTRODUCTION
The transmission oil cooler must be properly flushed if any of the following circumstances hold true:
- The transmission oil pan contains dirt or internal debris
- There are signs of transmission overheating
- A transmission that has been replaced with a new or remanufactured unit
Contaminants left behind in the oil cooler will cause premature transmission failure. Claims for transmission replacement or repair that fail to perform this procedure are subject to rejection or debit.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Flushing Procedure
- Wear eye protection. This procedure has the potential to spray transmission oil and transmission cooler flush.ย If the vehicle is still hot, allow enough time for the transmission oil to cool before attempting the flushing procedure.
- Obtain a can of Subaru
Transmission Cooler Flush (Part Number SOA868V9255). Two cans will be required for models that have two transmission oil coolers. - For models with two transmission oil coolers, complete steps 3-8 for each cooler using one can of Subaru
Transmission Cooler Flush for each cooler. Disconnect the cooler lines running from the first cooler to the second cooler so that the coolers are flushed independently. Make sure all of the lines have been flushed.
NOTE: Use P.N. SOA635303 for claim coding purposes in conjunction with a warranty repair.
- Locate the transmission end of the hoses that run to the transmission oil cooler. Securely connect one the hoses to the bottle of Subaru
Transmission Cooler Flush.ย Securely connect the other hose to another hose that runs to a waste container.ย An example is shown below.
Examples of vehicles equipped with additional transmission oil coolers:
CVTF cooler (with warmer function) on vehicles equipped with Auto Start-Stop.
Tribeca accessory transmission oil cooler.
- Hold the can in an upright position and flush. Use the entire contents of the can.ย Use another can if the fluid exiting the cooler is still not clear and free of debris.
- Disconnect the can from the vehicle and flush out any residual fluid with compressed air.
- Disconnect the waste container.
- Properly connect the transmission oil cooler hoses to the transmission and secure with factory hose clamps as shown below.
- Dispose of waste transmission fluid. Clean off any surfaces that may have been sprayed with transmission oil or transmission cooler flush.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS:
- SOA strongly discourages the printing and/or local storage of service information as previously released information and electronic publications may be updated at any time.
- Always check for any open recalls or campaigns anytime a vehicle is in for servicing.
- Always refer to STIS for the latest service information before performing any repairs.
