Summary
This bulletin announces a revised replacement procedure for installation of the front crankshaft oil seal. Includes all 2011MY+ vehicles with FA or FB Engines.
NUMBER: 02-161-15R
DATE: 04/16/15
REVISED: 08/04/20
| APPLICABILITY: | All 2011MY+ Vehicles with FA or FB Engines |
| SUBJECT: | New Installation Procedure for Front Crankshaft Oil Seal |
INTRODUCTION:
This bulletin announces a revised replacement procedure for installation of the front crankshaft oil seal.
PART INFORMATION:
- 806750080 (OIL SEAL 50X62X7) Front Crankshaft Oil Seal
- 806939060
(O-RING) O-Ring for Crankshaft Extension
COUNTERMEASURE IN PRODUCTION:
This new installation procedure was incorporated into production on SIA-built vehicles during early December, 2014 starting with the following:
- LEGACY: F*038350
- OUTBACK: F*272496
NOTE: FHI-built engines did not utilize oil on the outside of the seal during engine assembly.
SERVICE PROCEDURE / INFORMATION:
Follow the procedure supplied in the applicable Service Manual for accessing and removing the front crankshaft oil seal. To enhance retention of the oil seal and to eliminate any chance of blocking the oil return passages in the timing chain cover, make sure the seal bore in the cover is clean, dry and free of any fluids or contamination.
IMPORTANT: Do not apply any oil or sealer to the outside or inside of the seal or seal bore in the timing cover before installation.
When installing the seal into the timing cover, the proper seal installer must be used: S/T# J-51973.
NOTE: J-51973 replaces the SSTs called for in the service manual (41399FG020 and 398437700).
S/T# J-51973
REMINDER: Whenever removing the crankshaft extension, the o-ring on the extension must always be replaced during reassembly as it is a one-time use part.
CAREFULLY tap the new oil seal into position flush with the face of the timing cover as shown in the photo below using a plastic hammer and the specified installation tool.
TIP: Use a piece of cardboard against the radiator cooling fins as extra protection against damage from the hammer.

- Protection for 10,000 miles between oil changes
- Meets or exceeds the following specifications: API SP/SN PLUS/SN | ILSAC GF-6 | GM dexos1 Gen 3 | Meets Ford WSS-M2C947-B1 | Meets Ford WSS-M2C962-A1 |
- Advanced protection against the four main causes of engine breakdown: wear friction heat and deposits
- Delivers 40% stronger wear protection than industry standards to reduce friction and improve fuel economy
- Provides 15% better deposit defense vs. industry standards, keeping engines cleaner for smoother performance and longer-lasting protection
- Up to 2.5X better heat protection vs. industry standards to fight harmful sludge formation and thermal breakdown
- Engineered for excellent low-temperature flow, reducing metal-to-metal contact during cold starts โ when most engine wear typically occurs
- 3X Stronger than the leading full synthetic*
- 10X Better high stress performance**
- 20,000 miles between oil changes***
- Viscosity breakdown as measured in Kurt Orbahn test on 5W-30 grade
- As measured in Seq IX test under high load/torque conditions vs. API SQ test limits
- Full synthetic formula is engineered with Enhanced MaxLife Technology to prevent engine breakdown in vehicles with over 75,000 miles
- Formulated with seal conditioners to prevent and treat oil leaks, Valvoline Full Synthetic High Mileage minimizes oil consumption and maximizes engine life
- 50% better wear protection than the industry standard and 25% extra defense against deposits, sludge, corrosion and rust
- Meets or exceeds all requirements of ILSAC GF-6A, API SP, API SN with SN Plus, API SN
- American made and formulated, from the Original Motor Oil brand trusted for more than 150 years
- Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy full-synthetic motor oil 0W-20 is low-viscosity to help improve fuel economy.*
- Utilizes Mobil 1โs signature Triple Action Formula to deliver outstanding engine performance, protection, and cleanliness
- Helps protect critical engine parts for up to 10,000 miles between oil changesm,** controlling oxidation to prevent oil breakdown and maintaining excellent viscosity
- Meets ILSAC GF-6 standards to help provide low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) and timing chain wear protection while keeping your engine clean
- Helps extend engine life by working to prevent damaging deposits and sludge buildup
