INTRODUCTION:
As part of Subaruโs dedication to customer satisfaction, Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA) is announcing an extension to the Basic New Car Limited Warranty for the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) Gear Box Assembly for certain 2012-2018 MY vehicles. This will extend coverage under the Basic New Car Limited Warranty on vehicles sold or leased in the United States.
In areas where there are high concentrations of road salt used to melt snow and ice, there is a possibility corrosion may develop on the EPS Gear Box Assembly. If the vehicle were then to suffer a significant enough impact from hitting a pothole or similar road hazard, it is possible the impact could cause a portion of the EPS Gear Box housing to crack.
VERY IMPORTANT: It is very important to understand if this were to occur, there will NOT be a complete loss of steering assist. Instead, it could result in an uneven steering feel when turning left or right.
The EPS Gear Box Assembly Warranty Extension extends the original Basic New Car Limited Warranty as it applies to the EPS Gear Box Assembly only when a crack in the gear box housing is identified. The coverage period extends the vehicleโs Basic New Car Limited Warranty as it applies to the EPS Gear Box Assembly to ten (10) years / unlimited mileage. Repairs performed during this extended coverage period must be completed prior to the expiration of the ten year/ unlimited mileage period.
NOTE: ALWAYS perform a Vehicle Coverage Inquiry on Subarunet to determine eligibility for this warranty extension before proceeding with any inspection or repair. See sample inquiry result below.
IMPORTANT: This Warranty Extension is subject to the same terms and conditions set forth in the Basic New Car Limited Warranty. The Warranty Extension is only applicable to original equipment, Genuine Subaru EPS Gear Box Assembly including a Genuine Subaru Replacement Part. Aftermarket or used / salvage EPS Gear Box Assemblies are not covered by this Warranty Extension.

SERVICE PROCEDURE / INFORMATION:
REMINDER: Customer satisfaction and retention starts with performing quality repairs.
When a customer presents a vehicle for consideration of repairs to be covered by this Warranty Extension, the standard terms of the Basic New Car Limited Warranty will apply. As mentioned above, retailers must always confirm coverage before proceeding by performing a Vehicle Coverage Inquiry on Subarunet.com. If a customer presents with an EPS system concern outside of the terms of this Warranty Extension, contact the Claims Team and review for possible alternative coverage.
If a vehicle is presented with a customer concern of uneven steering wheel effort felt when turning, after confirming the condition, inspect the EPS gear box in the circled area shown in the illustration for any evidence of cracking.
EXAMPLES:
If a crack is confirmed, the EPS Gear Box Assembly must be replaced. The service procedures for replacement remain unchanged. Always refer to the applicable Service Manual and review the full requirements of the repair being performed. The Service Manual procedures contain information critical to performing an effective repair the first time and every time. This includes but is not limited to important SAFETY precautions, proper inspection criteria, necessary special tools, required processes and related one-time-use parts needed for a complete and lasting repair.
WARRANTY / CLAIM INFORMATION:
When a customer presents a vehicle for consideration of repairs to be covered by the Warranty Extension, the standard terms of the Basic New Car Limited Warranty will apply. As mentioned above, retailers must always confirm coverage before proceeding by performing a Vehicle Coverage Inquiry on Subarunet.com.
IMPORTANT REQUIREMENT: When replacement of the EPS Gear Box Assembly is required under the terms of this extension, the claim MUST be submitted with clear photos of the cracked gear box housing, similar to the example above. Any claim submitted without photos of the cracked gear box housing will be subject to a claim debit.

As part of Subaru of Americaโs dedication to customer satisfaction, this letter is to inform you of an extension to the Basic New Car Limited Warranty for your vehicleโs Electronic Power Steering Gear Box Assembly.
In areas where high concentrations of road salt are used to melt snow and ice, there is a possibility corrosion may develop on the electronic power steering gear box assembly. If the vehicle were then to suffer a significant enough impact from hitting a pothole or similar road hazard, it is possible the impact could cause a portion of the electronic power steering gear box housing to crack. It is very important to understand if this were to occur, there will NOT be a complete loss of steering assist. Instead, it could result in an uneven steering feel when turning left or right. As the warrantor of Subaru vehicles in the United States, Subaru of America is implementing this extension on the models listed above sold or leased in the United States.
Please note this is not a recall and it does not impact the safety of your vehicle. If your vehicle is operating as expected, you do not need to take your vehicle to a Subaru retailer for repairs.
NOTE: No action is required by you to receive the benefit of this warranty extension. The extension has been automatically applied to your vehicle.
12Electronic Power Steering Gear Box Assembly Warranty Extension
The Electronic Power Steering Gear Box Assembly Warranty Extension extends the vehicleโs original Basic New Car Limited Warranty only in the instance where there is a crack in the Electronic Power Steering Gear Box Assembly.
For all vehicles listed above:
- The coverage period extends the vehicleโs Basic New Car Limited Warranty as it applies to the Electronic Power Steering Gear Box Assembly to ten (10) years/ unlimited mileage.
- Inspections or repairs under this coverage period must be completed prior to the expiration of that ten-year period.
Only if you have a concern with the operation of the power steering in your vehicle would you need to schedule an appointment with an authorized Subaru retailer.

Reimbursement Eligibility
- You may be eligible for reimbursement if, prior to receiving this notice, you paid to have your electronic power steering gear box assembly replaced (due to a crack) following the expiration of the original Basic New Car Limited Warranty period of three (3) years or thirty six thousand (36,000) miles, but before the announcement of this newly extended warranty period of ten (10) years/ unlimited miles.
- You must have paid an out-of-pocket expense for a repair that would have been covered had it occurred during the warranty coverage period. This includes any deductible expense or partial reimbursement for repairs.
- If you have been previously reimbursed by SOA or one of its retailers for partial coverage of this repair, only the portion that has not been reimbursed is eligible for reimbursement.
- You are not eligible to recover any repair costs previously reimbursed or paid for by any third- party, including Subaru Added Security, other extended warranty providers, or an authorized Subaru retailer.

- Attach a copy of the receipt or invoice for the repair. A copy of the repair invoice or work order showing repair will meet this requirement.ย The invoice must show your vehicle model, vehicle identification number (VIN), the name and address of the facility that completed the repair, the cost of the repair (parts and labor), and the date the work was completed.
- Attach proof of payment, such as a copy of the canceled check, bank statement, cash receipt, or credit card receipt showing what you paid for the repair. ย

Please note the following important details regarding this program and review them with all appropriate personnel:
Electronic Power Steering Gear Box Assembly Warranty Extension
In areas where there are high concentrations of road salt used to melt snow and ice, there is a possibility that corrosion may develop on the electronic power steering gear box assembly. If the vehicle were then to suffer a significant enough impact from hitting a pothole or similar road hazard, it is possible the impact could cause a portion of the electronic power steering gear box housing to crack. It is very important to understand if this were to occur, there will NOT be a complete loss of steering assist. Instead, it could result in an uneven steering feel when turning left or right.
The Electronic Power Steering Gear Box Assembly Warranty Extension extends the original Basic New Car Limited Warranty as it applies to the Electronic Power Steering Gear Box Assembly only when a crack in the gear box assembly is identified. If a crack is confirmed, the gear box assembly must be replaced following the procedures outlined in Technical Service Bulletin 04-27-21, which will be available on STIS by the end of the day Wednesday, July 28.
The coverage period extends the vehicleโs Basic New Car Limited Warranty as it applies to the Electronic Power Steering gear box assembly to ten (10) years/ unlimited mileage. Repairs performed during this extended coverage period must be completed prior to the expiration of the ten year/ unlimited mileage period.
For vehicles within the coverage guidelines listed in bulletin 04-27-21, customers can schedule an appointment with an authorized Subaru retailer for inspection should they be experiencing any concerns with the operation of their electronic power steering. This extension only covers replacement of the gear box assembly when an Authorized Subaru Retailer inspects a covered vehicle for power steering concerns and confirms a crack in the gear box assembly.
NOTE: The Power Steering Gear Box Assembly Warranty Extension is subject to the same terms and conditions set forth in the Basic New Car Limited Warranty unless expressly modified by terms outlined in the Customer Notification Letter, with extension coverage being provided only when a crack is confirmed in the gear box housing. Retailer personnel are highly encouraged to review and be familiar with these terms and conditions prior to applying this extended coverage. Photos clearly showing the cracked portion are required as part of any claims submission as outlined in the 04-27-21 service bulletin.
Owner Notification
Subaru is sending a letter to all owners of affected vehicles. A copy of the Customer Notification Letter is linked here for reference. Customer letters will begin mailing the week of July 26, 2021.
Technical Instructions / Claim Procedures
Detailed instructions regarding the repair and warranty claim procedures will be provided in Technical Service Bulletin 04-27-21. The extension will be applied to all affected vehicles on Monday, July 26, 2021.
New and Pre-owned Vehicles in Retailer Inventory:
Subaru requests, for all pre-owned vehicles covered by this program, that all retailers inform customers at the time of sale the vehicle is covered by a Warranty Extension program Sharing a copy of the Customer Notification Letter (as linked previously in this announcement) is strongly recommended to ensure this information is fully communicated.
Customer Reimbursement
Subaru is reimbursing customers who previously paid for repair or replacement related to the Electronic Power Steering Gear Box Assembly Warranty Extension due to conditions that would normally have been covered if the vehicle was still under the terms of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. If a customer has paid to have a repair or replacement performed sometime in the past, they may be eligible for reimbursement under the terms of this Warranty Extension.
