INTRODUCTION:
In the interest of customer satisfaction, Subaru
of America, Inc. (SOA) is extending the New Car Limited Warranty coverage for the electronic connector lock tab for the Electric Parking Brake (EPB) assembly used in the above listed models and model years from (3) years or thirty-six thousand (36,000) miles (whichever comes first) to (15) years / unlimited mileage. This change is in response to an identified condition of a possible crack formation on the electronic connector lock tabs. This can cause an unsecure harness connection the EPB actuator resulting in illumination of the EPB warning on the combination meter. An added retaining clip has been developed to further secure the connection. If a fault source is found to be result of a cracked EPB connector tab, follow the inspection and repair procedures outlined withing this bulletin.
NOTE: ALWAYS perform a Vehicle Coverage Inquiry on Subarunet to determine eligibility for the Warranty Extension prior to proceeding with any inspection or repairs. See sample inquiry result below.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:
IMPORTANT: ONLY the OLD connectors are covered under the Warranty Extension.
STEP 1: CARFULLY prepare the vehicle lift and raise the vehicle.
STEP 2: Using the inspection gauge (p.n. 99804AL000) pictured to the right, insert the shallow portion between the EPB electrical connector connection and the EPB actuator. See the image below.
IMPORTANT NOTE: It is possible to have both old and new connectors fitted to the vehicle.
STEP 3: Using the inspection results from STEP 2, refer to the table below to confirm the next course of action. Perform further visual inspection of the connectors if needed.
STEP 4: Lower the vehicle.
NOTES:
- For vehicles fitted with one or more old connector, refer to the following STEPS and apply the procedures to the affected connector.
- Refer to the applicable Service Manual and review: General Description > Repair Contents > Action required before & after Battery Disconnect. Additionally, record any stored seat position(s) before proceeding. Relearn any seat position memory after work is complete. If the power rear gate (PRG) height has been customized, that position must also be noted and relearned.
STEP 5: Refer to the applicable Service Manual and review: General Description > Repair Contents > Action required before & after Battery Disconnect. Additionally, record any stored seat position(s) before proceeding. Relearn any seat position memory after work is complete. If the power rear gate (PRG) height has been customized, that position must also be noted and relearned. CAREFULLY disconnect the ground connection from the battery sensor.
STEP 6: Raise the vehicle.
STEP 7: Remove the rear wheel fitted on the side(s) fitted with the old connectors.
STEP 8: While facing the front side of the connector, CAREFULLY use plastic trim tool to remove the Terminal Position Assurance (TPA) and discard it.
STEP 9: Remove the ring seal from the connector and discard it.
STEP 10: Using an air blow gun, remove any dust or contaminates from both the male and female sides of the connection.
STEP 11: Install the new ring seal to the connector using a plastic trim tool. The ring seal is not specific to one side and can be installed in either direction.
STEP 12: CARFULLY install the new TPA positioned to the correct direction as indicated in the image below.
STEP 13: Confirm the ring seal and TPA are installed correctly. Use an air blow gun to remove any dust and / or contaminates.
STEP 14: Apply a small amount of Nippon Niglube RX-2 (p.n. 000041000) or Conoco Philips Multiplex Red #3 (equivalent) to a cotton swab.
STEP 15: Apply a thin layer of lubrication to the EPB actuator connection. Confirm it is applied no more than 5mm deep from the edge of the connector. Refer to the area indicated in orange color in the image to the right.
CAUTION: Do not allow the lubrication to come in contact with the electrical terminals. Do not push any lubrication further into the connection passed 5mm from the connector edge.
STEP 16: Route the EPB electrical connector through the loop portion of the tether on the retaining clip. The Clip portion should be facing the center of the vehicle. Refer to the image to the right.
CAUTION: Confirm the tether is not twisted.
STEP 17: Reconnect the EPB electrical connector to the EPB actuator.
STEP 18: Remove the connector and inspect the ring seal. Confirm the seal is not pinched or misaligned in anyway. If proper alignment is found, reinstall the connector. If the seal is pinched or misaligned in anyway, repair the seal alignment, recheck, and install the connector.
STEP 19: Attach the retaining clip between the EPB electrical connector and the EPB actuator. Confirm the two claws located on the clip, install securely to the the open portion of the connector. This will add increased security to the connection.
CAUTION: The retaining clip can be broken when applying strong impact force during attaching or detaching. See images below.
In order to prevent such breakage, when attaching the clip, slightly pinch the clip arms with both fingers and push them straight as shown in the illustrations below.
When detaching the clip (if required), spread the clip arms with fingers and pull them straight out as shown in the illustrations below.
DO NOT pull, push, shake or bend the clip base.
STEP 20: Once the clip is installed, perform a visual inspection of proper clip/connector alignment.
STEP 21: Using the inspection gauge (p.n. 99804AL000) pictured to the right, confirm the retaining clip is fully attached by inserting the deeper portion over the retaining clip. Align the grooves of the inspection gauge with the retaining clip sides. See the images below.
Confirm the deeper portion of the inspection gauge can be fitted as shown below.
STEP 22: Reinstall the affected wheel(s) and torque the lug nuts to 120N.m (88.5 ft-lb).
STEP 23: CAREFULLY lower the vehicle.
STEP 24: CAREFULLY reconnect the ground cable terminal to the battery sensor, torque to 7.5Nm (5.5ft.lbs. or 66inch-lbs.) while supporting the sensor with the other hand as outlined in the applicable Service Manual under: STARTING/CHARGING SYSTSEMS > Battery Sensor.
STEP 25: Using Subaru Select Monitor, clear all previously stored fault codes.
STEP 26: Perform a function test of the electronic parking brake
- Switch the ignition switch to the “ON” position.
- Release and apply the EPB switch and confirm its operation.
- Confirm the EPB warning light is not illuminated in the combination meter.
- Switch the ignition switch to the “OFF” position.

of America, Inc. (SOA) is announcing an extension to the Basic New Car Limited Warranty for the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) connector lock tab for certain 2015-2018MY Legacy, Outback & WRX
models equipped with automatic transmissions. This will extend coverage under the Basic New Car Limited Warranty on vehicles sold or leased in the United States. Please note the following important details regarding this program and review them with all appropriate personnel: Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) Connector lock Tab Warranty Extension Under certain conditions, some vehicles may experience a crack in the tab of the EPB adapter cord connector located at the rear brake disc. The technical service bulletin (06-87-22) should be followed to remedy this issue. The warranty extension will cover this concern should a customer encounter it during the warranty extension period. This warranty information is officially to announce that the warranty period of the EPB adapter cord connector will be extended to 15 years (180 months) with unlimited mileage, instead of the original warranty term of 3 years (36 months) or 36,000 miles (60,000km), whichever comes first. This extended warranty coverage will apply limited to the applicable models experiencing a crack in the tab of the EPB adapter cord connector. Labor and part cost to attach a retaining clip to prevent disconnect of the EPB adapter cord connector will be covered under this extended warranty. NOTE: The Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) connector lock tab warranty extension is subject to the same terms and conditions set forth in the Basic New Car Limited Warranty unless expressly modified by terms outlined in the Customer Notification Letter.
