| SUBJECT: | Hood Panel Vibration |
INTRODUCTION:
This bulletin provides a repair procedure to address a small number of customer concerns of the hood panel surface vibrating while driving. This condition can result if the mastic (adhesive) used to bond the inner hood reinforcing panel to the outer panel (skin) begins to separate.
REQUIRED TOOLS AND MATERIALS INFORMATION:
- 3M Panel Bonding Adhesive #08116 (200ml tube)
- 3M Mixing Nozzles #08193
- 3M Applicator #08571
- A 25 x 50 x 5mm (1” x 2” x .200 thick) non-metallic (plastic or wood) spacer with rounded edges
- Alcohol wipes (or isopropyl alcohol)
- Clean Shop Cloths
- 8: 90814FC001 Hood Insulation clips
SERVICE PROCEDURE / INFORMATION:
REMINDER: Customer satisfaction and retention starts with performing quality repairs.
The instructions supplied with the 3M adhesive product contain information critical to performing an effective repair. The product is readily available online and from most Auto Body supply outlets. Additional information is readily available on the 3M website: www.3MCollision.com. Product directions also include important SAFETY precautions and processes to follow for a complete and lasting repair.
- Use the photos below to identify the inspection areas and determine the potential repair points.
PREPARATION FOR REPAIR:
CAREFULLY remove the under hood insulation materials following the procedure in the applicable Service Manual. NOTE: The four (4) retaining clips (qty. 8 total) for both outer sections shown below p.n. 90814FC001 are 1-time use and MUST be replaced at reassembly.
- Thoroughly clean all areas indicated in the photos above where the repair adhesive will be applied with alcohol wipes (or isopropyl alcohol on a clean shop cloth). All application areas must be completely free of any foreign material (grease, dirt) which could prevent proper adhesion to either panel. Always allow the alcohol to dry completely before proceeding with application of the adhesive.
ADHESIVE APPLICATION:
- Before applying adhesive, CAREFULLY insert the spacer between the inner and outer hood panels at the location (s) indicated in the above photo on the side intended for the repair. Use two spacers if both the left and right side need to be repaired. Keep the edge of the spacer outside the gap as shown to make removal after the adhesive is cured easier.
- Using the fine point tip of the applicator nozzle, CAREFULLY apply the adhesive between the outer and inner hood panels as indicated in the photo above. Apply enough material to adhere both panels, keeping the width of the adhesive approximately 18mm (3/4in.).
- Use a clean shop cloth to wipe away any excess adhesive protruding from the edges of the application areas. Adhesive should not protrude from the edges of the inner openings after it is cured. Follow the specific 3M product instructions for the applicable cure times.
- After the adhesive is fully cured (24 hours at 73 degrees F ambient temperature), remove the spacer(s) to complete the repair.

- OEM Recommended Auto Adhesive – Professional two-part epoxy designed for bonding auto body panels; trusted by OEMs for non-structural repairs like quarter panels, roofs, and door skins.
- Strong Multi-Material Bond – Creates a durable hold on properly prepared steel, aluminum, SMC, and fiberglass (FRP) surfaces. Ideal for replacing welds or rivets in body repairs with a permanent, rust-resistant bond.
- Extended Work Time, Fast Cure – Offers a 90-minute working time for precise alignment, a 4-hour clamp time, and full cure at room temperature in 24 hours (can be accelerated with heat to speed up repair time).
- Weld & Rivet Friendly – Formulated for versatility: adhesive can be weld-bonded or rivet-bonded during its work time, giving technicians flexibility to secure panels while the epoxy cures.
- Easy Cartridge Application – Packaged in a convenient 200 mL dual cartridge for use with a standard applicator gun (not included). Integrated glass-bead technology ensures optimal bond line thickness and prevents over-clamping.
- Two part urethane used to bond steel and aluminum. The primary use is to replace quarter panels, roofs, box sides, van sides, utility vehicle sides and door skins.
- Bonding has many advantages vs welding: - No need to remove internal panels and rubber gaskets - No need to re-shape the metal deformed by the welding heat - No need to grind the welding spots - No need to disconnect the electronic system of the car as with traditional welding - No need of rust protection primer on the bonded area - No need of sealers because Polymix Metal Bond is a self-sealing adhesive
- Plasticbonder: Is A Quick-Set, 2 Part, Urethane Adhesive System That Provides Strong, Lasting Repairs And Works On Thermoset, Carbon Fiber Composites, Thermoplastics, Coated Metals, Concrete & More.
- Count On Us: For More Than 40 Years, Our Products Have Earned A Loyal Following From People Who Take Pride In Their Work. With Each Product We Innovate, We Continue To Provide The World'S Strongest Bond For Your Projects.

- EXCELLENT ADHESION: For use on a wide variety of plastic and metal substrates
- MULTIPLE USES: Bonds door skins, roof skins, quarter panels, box sides and bumper covers
- GLASS BEAD TECHNOLOGY: Protects against overclamping and maintains a minimum bond line thickness
- Auto Body Panel Repair - Ideal for bonding quarter panels, roofs, and door skins, roof skins, van sides, and other non-structural metal body panels.
- Body Panel Adhesive For Multi-Material - Bonding of materials such as steel, aluminum, plastics, polycarbonate, polystyrene,SMC, and fiberglass (FRP) surfaces. Not recommended for use with PP,PE,POM.
- Corrosion Resistance - Two-component epoxy adhesive with high bonding strength and excellent corrosion resistance.
- Extended Work Time - Working Time: 90 minutes for precise alignment,Clamp Time:4 hours,Full Cure Time:24 hours at 77℉ or above( can be heat cure to accelerate).
- For Best Result - Equalize Cartridge:extrude until equalize amount come from both side ,Then screw on the mixing nozzle and discard approximately 5 grams of the extruded adhesive, then mix thoroughly until the color is completely uniform.(avoid no drying issue).Use with a 1:1 Ratios 200 ml Cartridge Epoxy Gun(not included).
