SERVICE PROCEDURE / INFORMATION
NOTE: If the engine oil on the dipstick is found to be below the operating range (#3 shown below), determine if the low oil level is due to normal oil consumption or another cause which will need to be determined before proceeding further.
- When receiving a customer concern of the engine oil level warning lamp coming on, confirm the engine oil level is within the operating range (#3) on the dipstick as shown below. Park the vehicle on a level surface and stop the engine. If you check the oil level just after stopping the engine, wait a few minutes for the oil to drain back into the oil pan before checking the level.
1) Full Level
2) Low Level
3) A pproximately 1.1 US qt (1.0 liter, 0.9 imp qt) from low level to full level
- If the VIN of the vehicle is BEFORE E*417779, replace the oil level switch assembly with the new part (white connector with black harness retaining clips) following the procedure in the applicable Service Manual.
NOTE: The engine oil must be drained prior to removing the oil level switch assembly from the upper oil pan.
- After replacing the oil level switch assembly:
- Refill the engine oil.
- Bring the engine up to operating temperature to eliminate any aeration from the oil which could cause an incorrect reading.
- With the transmission in neutral, allow the engine to idle for 1 minute to see if the oil level light resets.
- If the oil level light does not illuminate, the repair is complete.
- If the oil level light illuminates and the engine oil level is confirmed to be within the operating range, diagnose the oil level switch circuit as per the applicable Service Manual.
