SERVICE PROCEDURE
NUMBER: 15-210-17
DATE: 07/12/17
APPLICABILITY: | 2017MY Impreza Models with Manual A/C ONLY |
SUBJECT: | Cruise Control Light Flashing Possible Cancel Code 61 |
INTRODUCTION:
This bulletin provides a service procedure for replacement of the A/C compressor clutch stator. A sudden voltage surge caused by A/C compressor clutch engagement can damage the stop lamp switch internal components. When the ECM detects the damaged stop lamp switch, the cruise control becomes inoperative and the cruise control indicator lamp flashes in the combination meter display. In some cases, a Cancel Code 61 may also be stored in memory.
PRODUCTION CHANGE INFORMATION:
Vehicle / Model | Starting VIN |
4-Door | H*622784 |
5-Door | H*743220 |
The new stators were incorporated into production starting with the following VINs:
PART INFORMATION:
Description | Part Number |
73192FL000 | STATOR KIT |
83311AL00A | SWITCH STOP LAMP |
A stop lamp switch, part number 83311AL00A must also be ordered through normal parts channels and installed AFTER the stator replacement. See Step 13 below.
SERVICE PROCEDURE / INFORMATION:
Step 1: Record the customer radio station presets (and navigation favorites where applicable and disconnect the negative (-) terminal from the battery).
Step 2: CAREFULLY remove the plastic drive belt cover to gain access.
Step 3: Using a 17mm wrench, CAREFULLY release the tension on the drive belt and remove it from the A/C clutch.
Step 4: Remove the Philips screw securing the ground wire and harness retaining eyelet. Disconnect the A/C clutch harness connector.
Step 5: By CAREFULLY using a readily-available pair of oil filter pliers to hold / keep the clutch from turning along with a ratchet and 10mm socket, remove the hex bolt. NOTE: The bolt only has about 10 ft. lbs. of torque on it. Be careful to not use excessive grip strength when holding the front plate with the pliers which could mar the outside edge.
VERY IMPORTANT: Be careful not to damage the front plate or lose the small flat washer located inside the splined hub portion while CAREFULLY removing it as shown below. This flat washer is actually a selective shim used to set the air gap between the front plate and the clutch pulley.
NOT ALL COMPRESSORS WILL HAVE THIS SHIM INSTALLED. The washer / shim is
NOT a serviceable part therefore, always insure proper precautions are taken to make sure it is not lost.
Step 6: Use an external snap ring plier to remove the outer snap ring. A curved type as shown below works the best and provides extra clearance around the prop rod retaining clip bracket. REMINDER: Always wear eye protection whenever working with snap rings.
Step 7: Once the outer snap ring is removed, use the same tool to remove the inner snap ring.
Step 8: After removing the inner snap ring and noting the orientation (wiring harness enters the stator at about the 1:00 position) for reference at reassembly, slide the original stator forward and off the compressor.
Step 9: Inspect the new snap rings and identify the “beveled” side of each as shown below. IMPORTANT: The beveled inside edge of both snap rings must always face front when reassembling the clutch.
Step 10: CAREFULLY spread (only as much as is necessary) and remove the metal retaining eyelet from the original harness and transfer it over to the new stator assembly as shown in the illustration below.
Step 11: Slide the new stator assembly into position on the compressor. Be sure to position the harness in the 1:00 position as was shown above. Hold the stator in position while CAREFULLY securing it using a NEW inner snap ring from the kit. REMINDER: These snap rings are one-time use items and must never be reused when performing this procedure.
Step 12: VERY IMPORTANT: Before reinstalling the front plate, the small flat washer / shim (if equipped / identified at disassembly) MUST be put back inside the splined hub portion. If there is no air gap visible between the front plate and the pulley face, the washer / shim has not been reinstalled.
Step 13: Replace and re-adjust the stop lamp switch assembly following the procedure in the applicable Service Manual. REMINDER: This must be done AFTER stator replacement.
Step 14: The remainder of this service procedure is performed in reverse order of disassembly.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
- While holding the front of the clutch, torque the 10mm hex nut to 9.75 ft. lbs. (13.2 Nm or 117 inch-pounds).
- Reconnect the A/C clutch wiring harness connector and secure the ground wire eye terminal and harness retaining eyelet to the compressor with the Philips screw as shown in the photo to the right. Always confirm proper belt alignment BEFORE restarting the engine.
Step 15: Reconnect the negative battery cable, start the engine and verify:
- Normal A/C operation
- Cruise lamp is no longer flashing
- Press the Cruise button and confirm the indicator illuminates properly
- If a Cancel Code 61 remains stored in memory, diagnose and repair the code as per the procedure outlined in the applicable Service Manual.
Step 16: Reset the customer’s radio station presets (and navigation favorites where applicable) to complete the procedure.
