Inoperative Backup Lights and Rearview Image
Inoperative backup lights and an inoperative rearview camera can reduce vehicle visibility and driver awareness, increasing the risk of a crash.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V522
Manufacturer Subaru of America, Inc.
Components EXTERIOR LIGHTING
Potential Number of Units Affected 59,934
Summary
Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2015-2021 WRX vehicles. The backup light switch may corrode and become inoperative, which can result in the backup lights not illuminating and the rearview camera image not displaying when the vehicle is in reverse.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and replace the backup light switch, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 19, 2022. Owners may contact Subaru’s customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru’s number for this recall is WRE-22.

NUMBER: WRE-22R
DATE: 09/02/22
REVISED: 01/05/24
NHTSA: 22V-522
APPLICABILITY: | 2015-2021 MY WRX STI |
SUBJECT: | Safety Recall – Back-Up Lamp Switch Failure |
UPDATE – November 2023: Please refer to the revised repair procedures contained in this bulletin. The intention of these revisions is to eliminate the need to remove exhaust components and the propeller shaft. The claim reimbursement labor time has not been changed.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DEFECT AND SAFETY RISK
The operating environment of the backup lamp switch may expose the internal switch contacts to heated oil. When heated, sulfur in the oil may cause a chemical reaction with the materials used on the switch terminal contact surfaces and plate spring. This chemical reaction may cause corrosion and a non-conductive film to form on the contacts resulting in poor electrical conductivity.
Over time, the backup lamp switch may become inoperative which may result in the backup lamps not illuminating when in reverse gear, the rear-view camera (if equipped) not displaying an image, and the select lever/gear position indicator in the combination meter not displaying ‘R’ for reverse gear.
If the backup lamps do not illuminate when the vehicle is in reverse gear, this may reduce the awareness of other motorists or road users of the driver’s intention to operate the vehicle in reverse, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, a rear-view camera (if equipped) that does not display an image can reduce the driver’s view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
REMEDY
For all potentially affected vehicles, Subaru retailers will conduct an inspection and replace the backup lamp switch with improved one, if necessary, at no cost to the customer.
Affected Vehicles
A total of 59,934 U.S. WRX STI vehicles will be affected by this recall, as listed below:
Model Year | Carline | Production Date Range |
2015-2021 | WRX STI | November 14, 2013 – October 21, 2021 |
Not all vehicles in the production range listed above are affected by this recall. Coverage must be confirmed by using the Vehicle Coverage Inquiry function on subarunet.com prior to repair.
OWNER NOTIFICATION
Subaru will notify affected vehicle owners by first class mail on September 16, 2022.
Chronology :
October 2019 – Subaru received the first field report from the U.S. market
February 2020 – Subaru identified a non-conductive film that builds up on the terminal contact surfaces and plate spring surfaces, when exposed to heated oil, resulting in electrical failure of the switch. Test results indicated that this condition could only be achieved under excessive or abusive driving conditions.
March 2021 – Subaru identified an unexpected increase in field reports from another market and determined that further investigation was required.
September 2021 – Based on additional testing, Subaru found that the non-conductive film can build up at a slightly lower temperature than originally determined when continuously exposed to the heated oil over extended driving periods.
July 14, 2022 – Subaru is aware of only one technical report and 0 VOQs in the U.S. market. Subaru is not aware of any crashes or injuries resulting from this condition. Out of an abundance of caution, Subaru decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.

Subaru Safety Recall WRE-22
Your VIN <%= targetData.VIN %>
Dear<%= targetData.f1rstName %>,
NHTSA ID 22V522
SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC. previously notified all affected vehicle
owners of this recall by first class mail on September 16, 2022,
regarding a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, in certain
2015-2021 model year WRX STI veh icles.
We are writing to inform you that Subaru has recently made an update
to the service procedure that optimizes the repair process and
accommodates veh icles with most aftermarket exhaust assemblies.
Descritpion of the Defect
Your vehicle may contain a defective backup lamp switch, which may
cause the backup lamps to not illuminate, the rear-view camera (if
equipped) to not display an image, and the select lever/gear position
indicator in the combination meter to not display ‘R’ when driving in
reverse.
Safety Risk
If the backup lamps do not illuminate when the vehicle is in reverse
gear, this may reduce the awareness of other motorists or road users
of the driver’s intention to operate the veh icle in reverse, increasing
the risk of a crash. Additionally, a rear-view camera that does not
display an image can reduce the driver’s view of what is behind the
vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
What Will Subaru Do
Subaru will conduct an inspection and replace the backup lamp
switch with an improved one, at no cost to you.
What You Should Do
Please contact your Subaru retailer (dealer) immediately for an
appointment to have this repair performed, at no cost to you.
Until this repair is performed, please use caution when driving in
reverse. You should always check the rear view and the
surrounding area by turning your head rearward and/or using the
mirrors and move backward at a slow speed.
How Long Will the Repair Take
The time it wi ll take to inspect your vehicle is less than fifteen
minutes. If it is found that the switch needs to be replaced, the time
for this repair is approximately two hours. However, it may be
necessary to leave your vehicle for a longer period of time on the day
of your scheduled appointment to allow your Subaru retailer flexibi lity
in scheduling.
Owner Information
Government regulations require that recall notifications be sent to the
last known owner of record. That information is based primarily on
state registration and title data. If you are a lessor of this vehicle,
federal regulations require you to forward this notice to your lessee
within ten days.
If you have moved or sold your vehicle, please go to
httRs:/jwww.subaru.com/SURROrt/customer-sURROrt.html to send us
your information.
If You Have Previously Paid for a Repair
If you have already paid for repairs associated with this condition, you
may be eligible for reimbursement. Reimbursement consideration will
be based on the amount an authorized Subaru retailer in your area
would charge for the same repair.

Dear Subaru Owner:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC. has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2015-2021 model year WRX STI vehicles.
You received this notice because our records indicate that you currently own one of these vehicles.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DEFECT
Your vehicle may contain a defective backup lamp switch, which may cause the backup lamps to not illuminate, the rear-view camera (if equipped) to not display an image, and the select lever/gear position indicator in the combination meter to not display ‘R’ when driving in reverse.
SAFETY RISK
If the backup lamps do not illuminate when the vehicle is in reverse gear, this may reduce the awareness of other motorists or road users of the driver’s intention to operate the vehicle in reverse, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, a rear-view camera that does not display an image can reduce the driver’s view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
WHAT SUBARU WILL DO
Subaru will conduct an inspection and replace the backup lamp switch with improved one, if necessary, at no cost to you.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
Please contact your Subaru retailer (dealer) immediately for an appointment to have this repair performed, at no cost to you.
Until this repair is performed, please use caution when driving in reverse. You should always check the rear view and the surrounding area by turning your head rearward and/or using the mirrors and move backward at a slow speed.
HOW LONG WILL THE REPAIR TAKE?
The time it will take to inspect your vehicle is less than fifteen minutes. If it is found that the switch needs to be replaced, the time for this repair is approximately two hours. However, it may be necessary to leave your vehicle for a longer period of time on the day of your scheduled appointment to allow your Subaru retailer flexibility in scheduling.
OWNER INFORMATION
Government regulations require that recall notifications be sent to the last known owner of record. That information is based primarily on state registration and title data. If you are a lessor of this vehicle, federal regulations require you to forward this notice to your lessee within ten days.
If you have moved or sold your vehicle, please go to https://www.subaru.com/support/customer-support.html to send us your information.
IF YOU HAVE PREVIOUSLY PAID FOR A REPAIR
If you have already paid for repairs associated with this condition, you may be eligible for reimbursement. Reimbursement consideration will be based on the amount an authorized Subaru retailer in your area would charge for the same repair.

NUMBER: WRE-22R
DATE: 09/02/22
REVISED: 11/10/23
NHTSA: 22V-522
APPLICABILITY: 2015-2021 MY WRX STI
SUBJECT: Safety Recall – Back-Up Lamp Switch Failure
UPDATE – November 2023: Please refer to the revised repair procedures contained in this
bulletin. The intention of these revisions is to eliminate the need to remove exhaust components
and the propeller shaft. The claim reimbursement labor time has not been changed.
Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is initiating a new safety recall for certain 2015-2021 model year
WRX STI vehicles, which may contain a defective back-up lamp switch.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DEFECT AND SAFETY RISK
The operating environment of the back-up lamp switch may expose the internal switch contacts to
heated oil. When heated, sulfur in the oil may cause a chemical reaction with the materials used on
the switch terminal contact surfaces and plate spring. This chemical reaction may cause corrosion and
a non-conductive film to form on the contacts resulting in poor electrical conductivity.
Over time, the back-up lamp switch may become inoperative which may result in the back-up lamps
not illuminating when in reverse gear, the rear-view camera (if equipped) not displaying an image,
and the select lever/gear position indicator in the combination meter not displaying ‘R’ for reverse
gear.
If the back-up lamps do not illuminate when the vehicle is in reverse gear, this may reduce the
awareness of other motorists or road users of the driver’s intention to operate the vehicle in reverse,
increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, a rear-view camera (if equipped) that does not display an
image can reduce the driver’s view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
REMEDY
For all potentially affected vehicles, Subaru retailers will conduct an inspection and replace the backup
lamp switch with improved one, if necessary, at no cost to the customer.

Dear Subaru Owner:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety
Act.
SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC. has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle
safety, exists in certain 2015-2021 model year WRX STI vehicles.
You received this notice because our records indicate that you currently own one of these
vehicles.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DEFECT
Your vehicle may contain a defective back-up lamp switch, which may cause the back-up
lamps to not illuminate, the rear-view camera (if equipped) to not display an image, and the
select lever/gear position indicator in the combination meter to not display ‘R’ when driving
in reverse.
SAFETY RISK
If the back-up lamps do not illuminate when the vehicle is in reverse gear, this may reduce
the awareness of other motorists or road users of the driver’s intention to operate the

not display an image can reduce the driver’s view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing
the risk of a crash.

Subaru will conduct an inspection and replace the back-up lamp switch with improved one,
if necessary, at no cost to you.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
Please contact your Subaru retailer (dealer) immediately for an appointment to have this
repair performed, at no cost to you.
Until this repair is performed, please use caution when driving in reverse. You should
always check the rear view and the surrounding area by turning your head rearward and/
or using the mirrors and move backward at a slow speed.
HOW LONG WILL THE REPAIR TAKE?
The time it will take to inspect your vehicle is less than fifteen minutes. If it is found that the
switch needs to be replaced, the time for this repair is approximately two hours. However,
it may be necessary to leave your vehicle for a longer period of time on the day of your
scheduled appointment to allow your Subaru retailer flexibility in scheduling.
OWNER INFORMATION

NUMBER: WRE-22R
DATE: 09/02/22
REVISED: 01/05/24
NHTSA: 22V-522

SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC. has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle
safety, exists in certain 2015-2021 model year WRX STI vehicles.
You received this notice because our records indicate that you currently own one of these

if necessary, at no cost to you.

DATE: 09/02/22
REVISED: 10/18/22
NHTSA: 22V-522
APPLICABILITY: 2015-2021 MY WRX STI
SUBJECT: Safety Recall – Back-Up Lamp Switch Failure
REMEDY

lamp switch with improved one, if necessary, at no cost to the customer.

Your vehicle may contain a defective back-up lamp switch, which may cause the back-up
lamps to not illuminate, the rear-view camera (if equipped) to not display an image, and the
select lever/gear position indicator in the combination meter to not display ‘R’ when driving
in reverse.
SAFETY RISK
If the back-up lamps do not illuminate when the vehicle is in reverse gear, this may reduce
the awareness of other motorists or road users of the driver’s intention to operate the
vehicle in reverse, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, a rear-view camera that does
not display an image can reduce the driver’s view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing
the risk of a crash.
WHAT SUBARU WILL DO
Subaru will conduct an inspection and replace the back-up lamp switch with improved one,
if necessary, at no cost to you.

Subarunet Announcement
To: All Subaru Retailers
From: Subaru of America, Inc.
Date: January 4, 2024
UPDATE Safety Recall: WRE-22 Backup lamp switch failure
Owner Re-Notification Affected vehicle owners were previously notified by first class mail on September 16, 2022. Subaru has obtained updated owner registration information, and will re-notify affected vehicle owners who have not yet had this safety recall performed, on January 11, 2024.
Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is initiating a new safety recall for certain 2015-2021 model year WRX STI vehicles, which may contain a defective backup lamp switch.
Model Year
Carline
Production Date Range
2015-2021
WRX STI
November 14, 2013 – October 21, 2021
Not all vehicles in the production range listed above are affected by this recall. Coverage must be confirmed by using the Vehicle Coverage Inquiry function on subarunet.com prior to repair.
Retailer Responsibility
Please be advised that it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to deliver a new motor vehicle covered by a recall under a sale or lease until the defect is remedied. Therefore, any Authorized Subaru Retailer failing to perform the applicable service procedures to correct all affected vehicles in their inventory prior to the vehicle being placed in service may be subject to civil penalties of up to $26,315 per violation (i.e., for each vehicle), as provided in 49 CFR §578.6 and will also be in breach of the Subaru Dealer Agreement.
Any vehicles listed in any recall/campaign that are in retailer stock must be:
▪
Immediately identified
▪
Tagged or otherwise marked to prevent their delivery or use prior to repair
▪
Repaired in accordance with the repair procedures outlined in the Product Campaign Bulletin
Retailers are to promptly perform the applicable service procedures, to correct all affected vehicles in their inventory (used, demo & SSLP). Whenever a vehicle subject to this recall is taken into retailer inventory necessary steps should be taken to ensure the recall correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.
Service, Parts, and Claim Instructions
Please refer to the WRE-22 Product Campaign bulletin on STIS for detailed information.
