REPAIR/SERVICE INFORMATION
Before performing the repair, check the following items first:
- Check to make sure the tires are properly inflated.
- Check to make sure the power steering fluid is at the proper level.
- Check to make sure the belt is properly adjusted.
- Check to make sure the hoses are properly aligned and not rubbing anything.
- Check to make sure there is no air in the system.
After making any necessary adjustments if the noise is still present, perform the following:
- Park the vehicle on a dry solid surface (concrete preferred). With the engine idling, transmission in park or neutral with the parking brake applied, turn the steering wheel to the full right or left position. If the noise is heard, replace the relief valve.
- Remove the power steering pump; refer to the applicable service manual.
- Place the power steering pump in a vise.
- Remove the plug using a 22mm box wrench.
- Using a pair of tweezers, remove the relief valve. Note: Be careful not to scratch the inside of the pump housing.
- Install a new relief valve.
- Confirm that the relief valve moves smoothly by pushing it in and out several times.
- Install plug and torque to proper specification 30~40 N-m (3.0~4.0 Kgf-m, 22.1~29.5 ft-lb)
- Reinstall power steering pump; refer to the applicable service manual.
