SUBJECT: | Change to Reverse Idler Gear Components |
INTRODUCTION
This bulletin informs of a design change to the reverse idler gear and its internal spring along with a revised assembly procedure. The only purpose for the change was to enhance production efficiency.
COUNTERMEASURE IN PRODUCTION
The new reverse idler components were incorporated into production during mid-October, 2013 starting with VIN E*224413.
PART INFORMATION
IMPORTANT: The revised parts listed in the table below must always be replaced as a set.
PART NAME | NEW PART NUMBER |
GEAR-REV IDLER | 32282AA210 |
SPRING-REV IDLER | 32369AA040 |
The illustrations below provide a reference for identifying differences between the old and new parts.
SERVICE PROCEDURE / INFORMATION
- Remove and disassemble the transmission as necessary to access the reverse idler gear assembly following the procedure outlined in the applicable Service Manual.
- Once removed from the case, disassemble the old reverse idler gear assembly.
- After a thorough cleaning and inspection of the parts to be reused, re-assemble using the exploded view below as a guide. The friction plate and snap ring are not selective parts.
- After the new reverse idler assembly is back together with the new gear and spring, hold the idler gear stationary then rotate the sub gear COUNTER-CLOCKWISE (left) 2 teeth to set the “pre-load” and hold it in that position. NOTE: You will need a helper for the next step.
- Using a piece of mechanic’s wire as shown below, left, wrap it around 2 pair of gear teeth (main and sub gear) and twist the ends of the wire together to hold the sub gear in position and maintain the pre-load. Since the new reverse idler gear only has one hole (used by one end of the spring), the mechanic’s wire serves the function of the alignment pin used on the original gear which had the second hole in it.
- Once the assembly has been reinstalled in the case as shown below, right, cut and remove the mechanic’s wire.
- Complete the reassembly following the procedure outlined in the applicable Service Manual.

- Helps optimize outstanding synchronizer performace with protective layer to ensure smooth and efficient shifting
- Provides better oil flow in both low and high temperatures
- Recommended for GM Part Numbers 12345349 and 12345577; Chrysler Part Number 4874464; and top up applications in GM Part Number 12377916. It also meets API GL-4 and is recommended for use where Mopar C Series PN 68092630AA is called for.
- Package Dimensions: 6.858 L x 22.352 H x 10.922 W (centimeters)
- New and improved formula that meets quality standards
- Improved shift quality
- Lower fluid friction
- Greater wear protection
- Package Dimensions: 28.575 H x 8.636 L x 8.89 W (centimetres)
- Package Weight: 0.839 kilograms
- Country of Origin : United States
- HIGH PERFORMANCE - Gear protection and longer synchro life. Recommended for GL-1, GL-3, and GL-4 applications, as well as where most special synchromesh fluids are specified.
- OFFERS QUICKER SHIFTS - MLT Gear Oil with balanced friction control for most manual transmission synchronizers. Other synthetic gear oils are often too slippery.
- SAFE FOR BRASS SYNCHROS - GL-4 Gear Oil lacks the reactive sulfurs found in most GL-5 oils that cause damage. Recommended for GL-1, GL-3 & GL-4 applications.
- POPULAR MOTOR OIL FOR - BMW, Honda/Acura, Ford Focus, late-model Mini Cooper, Land Rover/Range Rover LT77S, Mitsubishi, Dodge & Jeep NV1500, NV3500, NV3550 & NV5600 truck transmissions.
- WHY RED LINE - Established in 1979, Red Line Products perform & protect better than any on the market. No compromises.
- Use according to owner guide recommendations
- Manufactured with synthetic base oils and performance additives providing improved gear shifting at all ambient temperatures
- Due to its excellent thermal, oxidative and shear stability, this fluid meets Ford’s fill-for-life requirements
- Its wear protection extends the life of synchronizers and bearings
- Reduced friction and optimal lubrication reduces operating temperatures, increases component life and improves efficiency
- Widely compatible with a huge range of manual transmissions from BMW, VW/Audi, Ford, GM, Mercedes Benz 235.11, Toyota, Jeep, and many others; also recommended as where synchromesh fluids are specified
- Frictionally optimized for exceptionally smooth shifting, synchronizer engagement, and frictional stability; prevents shudder, sticking, slipping, and notchy shifting
- No reactive sulfurs; yellow metal / brass synchro safe as well as copper and aluminum alloys
- Excellent gear protection in high horsepower / high speed conditions and sustained mechanical / thermal loads such as racing and off-road conditions
- Extremely long drains, capable of 150,000+ miles drain intervals
- HIGH PERFORMANCE - gear protection and longer synchro life. Recommended for GL-1, GL-3, and GL-4 applications.
- QUICKER SHIFTS - perfect synchronizer coefficient of friction and eliminates notchy shifting, even when cold
- REQUIREMENTS - gear oil viscosity of 75W; 80W; SAE 40 10W40 and 15W40 motor oil
- POPULAR GEAR OIL FOR - GL-1, GL-3 and GL-4 applications, as well as where most special synchromesh fluids are specified. Safe for brass synchros, as it lacks the reactive sulfurs found in most GL-5 oils that cause damage
- WHY RED LINE - Established in 1979, Red Line Products perform & protect better than any on the market. No compromises
