ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) Device Mounting Guidelines – 2014 Subaru Forester

oemdtc January 13, 2017 No Comments

NUMBER: 06-45-13R
DATE: 08/07/13
REVISED: 08/08/13

APPLICABILITY: 2014MY Forester Models with EyeSight System
SUBJECT: ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) Device Mounting Guidelines

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this bulletin is to provide guidelines for proper positioning of ETC devices, i.e.,  EZ Pass, Sun Pass, K-Tag, etc, in vehicles equipped with the new EyeSight system.  Refer to the EyeSight Owner Manual and the applicable Service Manual for more detailed information.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

IMPORTANT:  When choosing a location for mounting your ETC device, the location must be compliant with any and all applicable Federal, State and Local laws and ordinances relating specifically to possible visual obstructions.  Other regulations may also apply so, please check with your specific authority.

The preferred location for an ETC device used on an EyeSight-equipped vehicle is the external or front license plate tag mount (LPT) as shown below.

The windshield area precautions below have been reprinted from the 2014 Forester EyeSight Owner Manual.  The prohibited gray zones shown in the illustration below are areas where items or stickers must never be placed.  Reflections from items installed both inside and outside these areas can still have an effect on the operation of the Eyesight system’s stereo camera.

  • Do not affix any stickers or install any accessories on the prohibited areas shown in the illustration below (grey zones). Doing so may affect the stereo camera field of view and could prevent the EyeSight system from functioning properly. If you must affix any stickers, such as automobile inspection certificate stickers, or install accessories, do not cover the front of the cameras. If abnormal EyeSight system operation occurs, remove stickers or accessories.
  • If the top of the instrument panel is polished with chemicals or other substances, the stereo cameras may not be able to detect objects accurately and the EyeSight system may not operate properly due to reflections in the front windshield.

Monitor or other accessories

IMPORTANT:  GPS receivers, radar detectors or other similar display devices must never be mounted anywhere in the gray zones of the dashboard or attached to the windshield.  Their own physical reflection and/or the light emitted from these devices, either from their LCD display screens or LED lights as often used with radar detectors,  can reflect off the inside of the windshield.  These reflections can interfere with EyeSight’s stereo camera, compromising proper operation of the system. Reflection can also result from the use of interior detailing products such as dash pad protectants or appearance dressings.  In addition, hood protectors other than Genuine Subaru Accessories may interfere with EyeSight operation and therefore are not recommended.  Inside or outside waterrepellant windshield coatings must never be used for similar reasons.

The illustration below shows a small area at the bottom of the windshield approximately 4 3/4 inches high (area A), not shown in the previous Prohibited Area diagram where if required, a sticker can be affixed (e.g., a Virginia state inspection certification sticker).

Monitor or other accessories

ETC Devices which do not fall within the provided dimensional tolerances must never be installed as they may interfere with the operation of EyeSight.

If a customer insists their ETC device must be installed on the inside of their windshield or their State’s ETC authority mandates a location near the center of the windshield for proper device recognition, use the illustration below for reference only.  It is NOT a template.
